ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup - Report: Vietnam 1-0 Indonesia

Vietnam secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Indonesia on Sunday, earning six points from their first two matches in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024.

At a packed Viet Tri Stadium, the Golden Star Warriors dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to break down a resilient Indonesian defense. The deadlock was finally broken in the 77th minute when captain Nguyen Quang Hai rifled in a shot to seal the three points.

This victory places Vietnam at the top of Group B, surpassing Indonesia, and marks their first clean sheet in 14 matches.

Match Highlights
Vietnam had an early opportunity, with Bui Tien Dung testing the Indonesian goalkeeper from outside the box following a corner in the third minute. Throughout the first half, Indonesia remained compact, waiting for counter-attacking opportunities, but struggled to create any significant chances.

Rafael Struick was introduced just before halftime to replace the injured Rivaldo Pakapahan, but his presence did little to boost Indonesia’s attacking threat. As the first half ended, Vietnam had dominated possession with 74%, recording eight attempts on goal—two of which were on target—while Indonesia failed to register a single shot.

Looking to spark a change, Indonesia's coach Shin Tae-yong made two substitutions at halftime, bringing on Victor Dethan and Pratama Arhan. The second half began with Vietnam increasing their intensity, but Indonesia held firm defensively.
Vietnam's best chance came in the 63rd minute when Ho Tan Tai narrowly missed scoring from a dangerous cross by Nguyen Van Vi. Indonesia finally threatened in the 64th minute, with Victor Dethan forcing a good save from Vietnam’s goalkeeper.
As the clock ticked down, both teams sensed urgency. Indonesia made another attempt in the 69th minute, again testing the Vietnamese keeper.

The breakthrough came shortly after, much to the relief of the home fans. Quang Hai scored a captain's goal in the 77th minute, firing from around 19 yards after being set up by Nguyen Tien Linh.

Next Stage
Vietnam nearly doubled their lead in the 86th minute when Nguyen Hai Long's long-range effort sailed just over the bar. In stoppage time, Vietnam focused on defending their lead, and after eight minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed their victory.
Vietnam's next match is against the Philippines in Manila on Wednesday, December 18, while Indonesia will host the same opponents in Surakarta on Saturday, December 21.
