Chelsea Bolsters Midfield with Signing of Dario Essugo from Sporting CP
Chelsea Football Club has made a significant move in the transfer market, officially confirming the acquisition of 20-year-old Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo from Sporting CP. The deal, finalized at €22.5 million (£18.5 million), sees Essugo sign an eight-year contract, tying him to Stamford Bridge until June 2033. The announcement, made on June 2, 2025, underscores Chelsea’s commitment to nurturing young talent with long-term potential.

Essugo, a Portugal Under-21 international, made history as Sporting CP’s youngest-ever debutant at 16 years and six days in 2021, later breaking Luis Figo’s record as the club’s youngest starter. With 25 first-team appearances for Sporting, plus loan spells at Chaves and Las Palmas—where he scored once in 27 games—Essugo brings versatility and experience. He is expected to serve as a backup for Moises Caicedo, particularly during the FIFA Club World Cup.

Under head coach Enzo Maresca, Chelsea continues to reshape its midfield, blending youth with established stars like Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. Fans and analysts are optimistic about Essugo’s potential to grow into a key player, as the Blues aim for success in both domestic and European competitions this season.
